Earth and Sky

Altamira Fine Art hosts a one-man show featuring the art of Jared Sanders.

The tranquil and atmospheric paintings of Utah-based artist Jared Sanders will be showcased in a one-man show at Altamira Fine Art starting at the end of July. An art graduate of Utah State University, where he studied under Glen Edwards, Sanders currently lives near the small town of Heber City, Utah. His moody paintings capture the farmlands, hills, rivers and trees that the artist intimately knows and loves.

Trio, oil on canvas, 38 x 25 in.

“I’m very inspired by the landscape of the American West. It’s part of who I am,” says Sanders. “Using the landscape as a starting point, I try to eliminate all the distractions and nonessential parts until all that is left are only the most important shapes and colors. I think this pursuit of finding the essence of the landscape and the manipulation of the composition is what gives the work a very quiet feeling. Another [aspect] of the quietude in the work I can only explain as that’s just what comes out when I paint.”

At times, Sanders’ paintings almost feel like vintage photographs or illustrations from the pages of old botanical science books. His soft, desaturated palette lends itself to a sense of gentle drama, evident in paintings like God’s Country, Lake Side and Between Earth and Sky, which also happens to be the title of the show.

Lake Side, oil on canvas, 36 x 84 in.

“The colors I use are very personal in that they are colors that feel comfortable to me. If a color doesn’t feel right, it’s not right. Since I’m not trying to recreate the exact scene, the colors and their relationships only have to work for me. I do like the richness and sophistication that the more muted, unsaturated tones give my work,” says the artist.

Between Earth and Sky will be on view from July 29 to August 12 at Altamira Fine Art in Jackson, Wyoming. An opening reception is set for Thursday, July 31, from 5 to 7 in the evening.

God’s Country, oil on canvas, 60 x 60 in.

“Jared Sanders brings a quiet power to Western landscapes—his work captures not just the scenery but the stillness, solitude and spirit of place,” comments Jason Williams, owner of Altamira Fine Art. “This exhibition invites collectors to connect with the West in its most elemental form: vast skies, weathered structures and the poetry of open space.” —
